Examines the growth of Norwegian support for Israel during the 1940s and 1950s. "What emerges from these crucial years is a complex picture of the Norway-Israel 'best friend' relationship. Among the general public, as well as within Labor Party circles, there was firm support for plucky little Israel. In the end, and despite the tough in-fighting within the confines of the Foreign Ministry and upper diplomatic/bureaucratic circles, a heartfelt friendship was established between Norway and the new state of Israel. In any ranking of Israel's best friends in the 1940s and 1950s, Norway would certainly be near the top" (p210).
