INSS 10th Annual Conference, January 2017

Israel's security is better than it ever has been. Israel has the strongest military in the region, and it is not faced with any existential threat. For the State of Israel, the Iranian threat is far greater than the threat of the Islamic State. In the short term, the nuclear agreement with Iran is a positive development, and made Israel more secure. The Islamic State does not have ballistic missiles, and is akin to another terrorist organization
Israel has succeeded in achieving stability and deterrence, even vs. terrorist groups such as Hezbollah. Syria was the main conventional threat faced by Israel. In 2007 I would have ranked the threat of the Syrian army as very high.
Uncertainty in the United States is not good for the world. Israel must continue to have an ally in the United States.
On the Israel-Palestinian conflict, we must move beyond "all or nothing." Strategically it was right to withdraw from Gaza, but this move was implemented in problematic fashion. New wars will be protracted and without decisive and rapid victories. Israel must continue to prepare for future confrontations vs. Hamas and Hezbollah.
