    Dr. Ariel Heimann is a senior researcher at the INSS.  Ariel is a geologist, teaching at the Hebrew University and previously served as a senior researcher at the Geological Survey of Israel. His research is focused on earthquakes, plate tectonics, the Dead Sea Transform, volcanism, and radiometric dating of rocks. Ariel conducted his Ph.D. studies at the Hebrew University and his post doctorate in the US. Ariel was for many years member in the Israeli governmental committee for defending against future earthquakes.

    In parallel to his scientific career, Dr. Heimann has served as an active officer in the IDF reserve armored forces in different positions including a Division Commander. In 2002 he became the IDF’s first Chief Reserve Officer, a position he held until 2005 as a Brigadier General.  Between 2007-2017, Ariel served as Director General of the Davidson Institute of Science Education, the educational branch of the Weizmann Institute of Science.

    At present, Ariel is the CEO of "Or consulting & Development" company. He also is back to geological research and teaching at the Hebrew University, mainly in the field of earthquake geology. Ariel is broadcasting a weekly program at the military station Galei Zahal. Dr. Ariel Heimann also holds the following positions: (1) Head of the Education Committee at The National Council for Research and Development. (2) Chairman of the General Assembly of the Israel Geological Society. (3) Member of the board – David Yellin College of Education, Jerusalem. (4) Member of the board and head of the Strategic Committee – Israel Nature & Heritage Foundation.
