Ehud Barak’s election as Israel’s new Prime Minister has created a unique opportunity to advance Israel’s interests dramatically in both the regional and the international arenas. This is due to the considerable disappointment created by the Netanyahu government in the Middle East, the US, and Europe, and the high expectations that have developed in these quarters that the Barak government will bring about a breakthrough in the Arab-Israel peace process. Should such a breakthrough occur, a new era will open in the relations between Israel and a large number of states, also resulting in a significant improvement in the Israeli economy.
