Israel’s National Security Council announced that an attempted attack by the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards against an Israeli target in Georgia was foiled recently. This is yet one more of over one dozen similar attempts by Iran to attack Israeli and Jewish targets abroad over the past two years.
Iranian activity against targets identified with Israel abroad accelerated greatly following the killing in Tehran (November 2020) of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the head of the Iranian nuclear program, which Iran attributed to Israel. According to the NSC, the recent attempted attack in Georgia, which targeted an Israeli citizen living there who worked to promote Israel's relations with Georgia and with other countries in the region, was in advanced stages. The operation involved a number of teams operating in different countries under the guidance of the Quds Force, and included people with dual Georgian-Iranian citizenship and “Pakistani hitmen affiliated with al-Qaeda.” If the information is verified, special attention should be paid to the possibility of cooperation between Iranian intelligence agents and operatives affiliated with al-Qaeda. In this context, note that for years Iran has hosted senior officials from the al-Qaeda organization in its territory.
The thwarting of Iran's efforts to carry out terrorist acts against targets identified with Israel is the result of high-quality intelligence and effective deterrence capability, which is apparently based on cooperation between Israel and local security forces. Due to the level of the threat and the substantial risk to Israel's national security, thwarting Iran's actions to obtain a nuclear capability and reducing its involvement in upgrading the military capabilities of its allies among militias in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen are at the top of Israel’s list of security priorities. However, Iran's repeated attempts to attack Israel abroad – although they have not caused the loss of human life – deserve public attention, because nothing lasts forever.
