Program Overview: This summer study abroad program in Tel Aviv, Israel is designed for graduate students studying Political Science, International Relations, Strategic Studies, Diplomacy and Conflict Studies, Government, Middle Eastern Studies, History, Economics, and such. Classes are held at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in collaboration with the Tel Aviv University in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Program Description: Students are expected to book their own flights to Tel Aviv, Israel and arrive before July 16, 2017. The program officially ends on August 3, 2017, and students may choose to depart for the U.S. on that date, or stay to travel on their own.

Course Information:
Students can enroll in the following nine credits:

  • The Middle East after the Arab Upheaval
  • Jihadi-Sunni Terrorism and Non-State Actors as an Ongoing Challenge
  • Israel's National Security Concept in an Unstable Neighborhood

*Students are not committed to enrolling in all three classes but can choose to either partake in one or two; however, enrolling in all three to receive the full experience is highly recommended. Each course lasts 5 days; the first 4 being designated to lectures and a simulation. Overall 24 academic hours, 6 per day. The last day of each course will be a field excursion with a guide (8 academic hours) and will be relevant to the appropriate class.

Field Excursion:

Each course will have a designated field excursion that will relate to the course in a relevant way, and provide an even further in-depth look at the situation. This will allow students to connect with what is learned in the classroom to patterns in the region, cultural differences and traditions.

  • Golan Heights – Seeing the battlefield facing the Syrian border of the Golan Heights
  • Gaza Strip – Viewing the military campaigns against Hamas along the border and examining the borders and patrol areas uncovered and destroyed by the IDF in the recent campaign
  • Jerusalem - Meeting between the various communities and area, the security fence, the Holy Basin, and other areas of dispute in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

•      Must be a graduate student studying in the relevant fields of Political Science,
International Relations, Strategic Studies, Diplomacy and Conflict Studies,
Government, Middle Eastern Studies, History,Economics, and such.

•      Existing writing example from degree
•      Transcript (does mot need to be offical)

•      Must be in good-standing position at their university

Program Information:

This study abroad program will provide a unique, hands on learning experience by offering graduate students an immersive opportunity to broad their Middle East perspective of challenges facing Israel and the region. Students will have the opportunity to take courses that can contribute to the completion of their Graduate degree. Courses will be taught in English. Since the Israeli workweek is Sunday through Thursday, students will have Fridays and Saturdays off to explore Israel as well. Students will stay in full furnished dorm rooms (including kitchen) of Tel Aviv University within close proximity to the beach, markets and nightlife.

The courses taught during this study abroad program will be enhanced by the content specific to issues regarding Israel and the Middle East. For example, students will have the opportunity to hear guest lectures from high ranking officials (both current/former) in the Israel Defense Force, Israeli Security Establishment, Israeli Government officials, and more. In addition to the unique educational opportunities, this program will offer a variety of experiences for students interested in Israeli culture. For example, students will be living in the white city, Tel Aviv, explore the historic sites of Jerusalem, and tour the coasts and markets of Israel.

Program Costs:

The tuition for the program will be sponsored by the Institute for National Security Studies. Students will be expected to pay a fee of $500 per course they sign up for. Airfare, most meals and personal expenses will not be included.

Kobi Michael is a senior research fellow at INSS. Among his primary research interests are peace and war studies; strategy; national security; civil-military relations; socio-military relations; peace maintenance; and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Dr. Michael served as the deputy director general and head of the Palestinian desk at the Ministry for Strategic Affairs. He was a member of the faculty at Ben Gurion University (2008-2011), a senior faculty member at Ariel University (2013-2015), and a visiting professor at Northwestern University in Illinois (2006-7). He has published widely in his field - including 12 books and monographs and over 50 articles and chapters in books - and has been awarded several academic prizes, among them, the Yariv Prize, the Tshetshik Prize, the Yitzhak Sadeh Prize, and the Israeli Association for Political Science Prize, awarded for the best book of 2008-9. His most recent book The Arab World on the Road to State Failure (in Hebrew, co-authored with Yoel Guzansky) was published in July 2016.
