Trump Still Wants a Deal, Israel Seeks to Maintain Pressure
Eldad Shavit
29 July, 2026

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s visit to Washington took place at a moment when the American attempt to promote an arrangement with Iran once again collided with escalation on the ground. The firing of Iranian missiles at American forces, the U.S.-Saudi strikes against pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, and the attempts to strike oil targets in Saudi Arabia demonstrated that the lull was fragile and that the campaign could once again expand.

Against this backdrop, reports regarding Iranian activity at the "Pickaxe Mountain" took on special significance. According to reports, Netanyahu sought to present Trump with information about Iranian efforts to advance nuclear infrastructure in the underground complex. Trump responded prior to the meeting, stating in an interview that he does not need Netanyahu to know what is happening at the site, adding that the Prime Minister is raising the issue because he wants the United States to "stay involved."

The remark is not merely a personal gibe; it exposes the core of the disagreement. Netanyahu seeks to demonstrate that Iran is exploiting the talks and the pauses to preserve and rebuild its capabilities, and therefore there should be no rush toward a partial arrangement. Trump, by contrast, wants to make it clear that the intelligence picture and the decision of whether to strike remain in his hands, and that from his perspective, the threat to Pickaxe Mountain is primarily leverage to bring Iran to a deal. In that same interview, he even emphasized that good talks are taking place with Tehran, alongside a threat to strike the site if an agreement is not reached.

Both sides sought to project "business as usual" after the meeting. Netanyahu described it as excellent, and the White House characterized it as positive and productive. However, the meeting was held behind closed doors, without journalists present, without a joint statement, and without detailing any understandings. While this does not necessarily indicate a crisis, it also does not prove that the gaps were closed.

The visit illustrates that the disagreement is not over whether to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, but how and when to conclude the campaign. Israel is seeking an arrangement that includes addressing the uranium stockpile, effective supervision, preventing the reconstruction of infrastructure, and an agreed-upon mechanism for responding to violations. In the absence of feasibility for such an arrangement, it also seeks to preserve operational freedom to resume military action. Trump, on the other hand, aims to translate military pressure into a deal that will first and foremost guarantee freedom of navigation and allow for a reduction in U.S. involvement.

The success of the visit will therefore be measured not by the positive descriptions of the meeting, but by Israel's ability to influence the continuation of the campaign, the terms of the arrangement, and, above all, the American end goal.
