Liberman: Abbas is ‘illegitimate leader’ who doesn’t strive for peace

10th Annual International Conference

“There is no one to sign an agreement that would dramatically change reality,” Liberman said at at a conference hosted by the Israeli Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv. “What’s needed is strong leadership who enjoys support on the ground, but [Abbas] is not a legitimate leader,” he said. The defense minister further charged that Israel previously offered Abbas “half of Jerusalem, the evacuation of the West Bank and to re-open talks regarding the issue of refugees.” Liberman’s speech at the INSS conference came hours after he announced that the government had approved the construction of approximately 2,500 homes in the West Bank.

In response to Maj. Gen. (ret.) Yadlin's question as to how the Liberman's views have changed since he became Minister of Defense, Liberman insisted that his views have remain consistent, and have just been sharpened in hi s new position. "The world is going in a difficult direction. Syria is moving toward a political arrangement without American involvement, and the picture painted by the ew report by the US intelligence community is very pessimistic. Not all in the region is dependent on  Israel. There is a vacuum in the Middle East, created by the United States. The Middle East is proceeding in a difficult direction. Israel has done well by retaining a controlled, stable environment."

I am not willing to give advice to the United States, when not asked to do so, But I would say this to everyone: Leave the Israeli-Palestinian alone. External intervention only hurts. Look at all the instance sof European involvement. There are no examples of successful intervention."

"the repeated attempts to do what was initiated in 1993 fit Einstein's defintiion of stupidity. Israel cannot offer Abu Mazen any more than he was offered in Annapolis. We offered all; he gave nothing. He has no capacity to do so, He is an illegitimate ruler who is unable to lead or persuade. According to polls, more than 60 % of the Palestinian do not back Abu Mazen as their leader.. There is no Palestinian Authority. Ther is Hamas in Gaza; Fatah in the West Bank."

"There r is no possibility of peace - pace is not a relevant term here. Thus, the road to an arrangement with the Palestinians is not in bilateral terms, rather in a regional arrangement, which includes the pragmatic Sunni states. Any model that has been presented to Israel regarding resolution of the conflict lacks all logic.""

The guiding principle must be: land and population swaps. The blocs of settlements must remain under Israeli sovereignty. Not one resident will be moved. And this arrangement poses no problems regarding international law. There is no reason that Arabs who see themselves as Palestinians should be Israeli citizens."

"The next war: you don't go to war with partial strength. You use all you power until the other side raises a white flag. There is no hermetic closure of Israel, and so it is impossible to present every single rocket or missile from falling in Israel. Therefor, Israel must reach a decision as quickly as possible. Our request to others: leave us alone. Our goal is that our neighbors will understand that it is not worth their while or in their inerest to invest efforts to try to destroy Israel."

"Syria: What is the European Union doing in face of this mass murder? Israel is intent on preserving its interests, and lending whatever humanitarian assistance it can, in quiet ways that cannot be made public. Of Russia, Israel demands that Iran be removed from the scene; that Hezbollah be removed from the scene; and certainly that any advanced Russian weapon systems not reach Hezbollah. In any case: Assad must go - at least that is my opinion. No Iranian proxy can stay in power. Irrespective of the JCPOA, Iran remains Israel's main danger and threat. Iran remains a main sponsorer of terror."

Should Maale Adumim be annexed? "Israel must act with intelligence. Sovereignty over Maale Adumim is a function of agreement between us and the United States. All issues are on the table. We hope tor each agreements witht he United States. The authorization to build in Judea and Samaria is not a new policy. The priorities for building are: Jerusalem; the settlement blocs; and then, elsewhere in Judea and Samaria."

Regarding Elor Azaria,"I consistently siad that the legal issue must be separated from operational aspects and from all political aspects. We must respect the decision of the court, but it must be clear: with oldiers serving in the area and combating terror day in and day out, mistakes will be made. We need to think how to support our soldiers."

"The Middle East needs more than five years to become an island of stability."
