On July 4, 2019, INSS held a closed conference on the role of ideological and political considerations in national security decision making. The conference sought to examine the effects of such considerations on strategic intelligence and on the relationship between decision makers and intelligence at the present time. The conference was held within the framework of the INSS Lipkin-Shahak Program: National Security and Democracy in an Era of Post-Truth and Fake News, and as part of the INSS working group on this subject, in collaboration with the intelligence community. The research program, named after the late Lt. Gen. (ret.) Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, was launched at INSS in January 2019, with the purpose of developing tools and methods for clarifying reality and decision making in the fields of national security and democracy in the post-truth age, understanding these phenomena, analyzing their implications, and proposing possible directions for addressing them.
