INSS mourns the passing of Dr. Emily B. Landau, a senior research fellow and head of the Arms Control and Regional Security Program at INSS.
Emily first joined the Institute in 1986, and was a central part of its activity over more than three decades. Her fields of research included nuclear proliferation, arms control, and regional security dynamics in the Middle East; Israel's nuclear image and policy; the Iranian and North Korean nuclear challenges; WMD challenges; and developments in global arms control thinking, particularly in the nuclear realm. Her vast academic and analytical research over the years earned her international renown, and was a major contribution to experts in Israel and throughout the world, particularly in the arms control community.
Emily’s numerous publications include books, monographs, articles, and policy papers. She earned a B.A. in political science and English literature and an M.A. in political science from Tel Aviv University, and a Ph.D. in international relations from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Over the years she lectured in academic forums and at conferences in Israel and abroad, and appeared frequently in the media, commenting on issues in her field of work. She also participated in many professional gatherings and in Track II forums related to arms control and regional security.
The Director and staff of INSS are deeply grieved over the loss of their colleague, and express their condolences to Emily’s family. She will be sorely missed at the Institute.
