The role of the police is to reach the truth; understand it in a legal context, and consider the public interest. I understand how important it is for the Commissioner to be independent. The Police are an independent body. When it comes to investigating public figures, the initiative and authority to do so must come from the legal authorities, from the Prosecutor’s office, and then reach the Attorney General’s office.
The Commissioners is not “Investigator #1” and never examined the Prime Minister. It was my job to read testimonies in order to get perspective. It was also very important for me to support the police investigation teams.
The Prime Minister was not framed by the Police. Again, the Police don’t have the authority to do that, since the initiative and overseeing body is the Prosecution’s office.
It is hard to see how the Prime Minister will not be indicted for bribery, based on the evidence.
The Commissioner: I never leaked anything, and the Police do not leak. Leaks emerge other ways, not through the Police. I don’t see anything personal in the behavior of the Prime Minister toward me. Already half way through my tenure I knew that my term would not be extended for a fourth year. Regarding any promises that might have been made to me about future positions when I was first offered the job, I made it clear to the Prime Minister from the outset that all promises were null and void.
The Attorney General is acting in a very professional manner. There is a very good system of checks and balances. He needs to take the decision that one does his / her job – and thereafter, that person is immune to pressure, knowing that he / she is acting as a professional, in the service of the state.
I do not feel that the religious community has turned against me – on the contrary.
