Development of a 500-Kilowatt Laser System: A Breakthrough for the Battlefield

The announcement regarding an agreement between the US Department of Defense and Lockheed Martin to develop a 500-kilowatt high-energy laser (JLWS) for intercepting cruise missiles, UAVs, and drone swarms carries significant operational implications.

The project involves the development of an operational prototype of a mobile, modular system with operational flexibility in both land and maritime scenarios, designed to counter large numbers of various aerial threats involving unmanned vehicles. The development will take place in stages, with a gradual increase in power output starting from 150 kilowatts to the target of 500 kilowatts— five times the power of the Israeli "Iron Beam" (Or Eitan) system, according to foreign reports.

The development of this system reflects lessons learned from the Russia–Ukraine War and the recent war in the Middle East. In both conflicts, large numbers of unmanned attack vehicles were deployed on the battlefield, while the only available countermeasure was kinetic weapons, which are both limited in quantity and costly. The laser system offers inherent advantages over kinetic systems: the laser is non-depleting (an unlimited magazine), its operation does not involve hazardous materials, and the cost per shot is extremely low.

Furthermore, firing occurs at the speed of light—a significant added value in the Middle Eastern theater, where the distances between attacking forces and maneuvering forces, infrastructure, or population centers are very short. In addition, the low flight altitude and maneuverability of unmanned vehicles demand an extraordinarily fast response time, on the order of microseconds.

It is important to emphasize that upgrading fiber-optic or solid-state laser systems to power levels of 500 kilowatts and more—while maintaining the operational flexibility, system dimensions, and weight required for tactical use on the battlefield—presents a considerable engineering challenge. At the same time, such a system holds strategic potential that could fundamentally change the rules of engagement on the future battlefield.
