More than half of Americans express an unfavorable opinion of Israel, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted March 24-30 among a nationally representative sample of 3,605 US adults. The increase in negative attitudes toward Israel is evident in all age categories and among both Republicans and Democrats. Overall, 53% of Americans expressed a very or somewhat unfavorable view of Israel, an increase from 42% in 2022. The increase among Americans who express a very unfavorable view was especially sharp, doubling from 10% in 2022 to 19% in 2025. The findings echo similar results reported last month by Gallup. The new survey also reports a downward trend in the share of Americans who view the Israel-Hamas war as important to US national interest (75% in 2024 compared to 66% in 2025) and an overall negative attitude toward Prime Minister Netanyahu, with just 32% saying they have confidence that he will “do the right thing in world affairs.” The reports by the Pew Research Center and Gallup are “gold standard” studies, based on many years of data collection, and testify to Israel’s rapidly deteriorating standing in the US public.
