Amid the chaos caused by the dramatic operation to explode the pagers of Hezbollah operatives throughout Lebanon, the disclosure of the details about neutralizing a Climagor anti-personnel weapon device in a public park in Tel Aviv last September was almost overlooked. This device was intended to target IDF Chief of Staff and former Minister of Defense Moshe Ya’alon.
The squads involved in this incident consisted of Palestinians sent by Hezbollah. Previously, Hezbollah had recruited a Palestinian in Lebanon, trained him, and then infiltrated him into Israel with the intent of carrying out a massive attack using a Climagor device brought with him from Lebanon. This attack occurred on March 13, 2023, in Megiddo. Instead of hitting a civilian bus as planned, an Israeli citizen driving nearby was injured, and a mass disaster was avoided.
Attacks by individual operatives sent by Hezbollah into Israel with explosive devices are not a new phenomenon, having occurred in the 1990s. However, the new development is Hezbollah’s attempt to use particularly deadly explosives in the heart of Israeli cities. The organization has also publicly expressed its intention to assassinate senior Israeli officials within Israel, in retaliation for the assassination of Fuad Shukr. It should be noted that Hezbollah has not ruled out such actions abroad either. Of course, whether targeting high-ranking officials or causing harm to civilians, these threats must be taken seriously, especially given the escalating confrontation with Hezbollah and other elements of the Shiite axis.
Israel’s recent operation in Lebanon to explode the beepers represents another escalation in the military campaign between Israel, Hezbollah, and the Shiite axis. It’s expected to increase the motivation of the Axis to carry out terrorist attacks against Israel and Israelis, both within Israel and abroad, going beyond the risk of a widespread war breaking out.
