This week we received a living example of a national security disaster of unrestrained governmental power. A "reform" that seeks to limit only the power of the judiciary without creating other mechanisms to curb the power of the Knesset and the government is wrong and dangerous. Effective separation of powers must include a mechanism to curb the power of the Knesset and the government. Unbridled governmental power endangers the security of the country, violates human rights, and causes a rift between the groups in society.
As a member of the Ethiopian Jewish community, I contend out that the harm inherent in the so-called reform outweighs the benefit. The proposed overhaul locks the gates of the courts of justice in front of the Ethiopian Jewish community and other minority groups. It creates a wall that will make it difficult to receive court protection against institutional discrimination, manifestations of racism, and other injustices by the legislative and executive branches. The reform may lead to the fact that there will be no element that prevents members of the Knesset from abusing the trust of their constituents and harming minority groups in society.
The crisis that engulfs us is also an opportunity to conduct a deep and thorough discussion on the activity of all government authorities and to create a mechanism that offers an effective and sustainable solution to the problem of separation of powers.
