The proposal to establish a civil guard in Israel’s Arab society, from within the Arab society itself, is an understandable proposal, arising from the civilian frustration and national despair of the Arab minority. However, this is a faulty proposal and must not be adopted.
There is no need to go into details about the critical condition of the Arab society in Israel. The reasons for this situation are many, varied, and complex. As such, both the state and the leaders of Arab society must undertake a process of serious, profound soul-searching; How did we get here? However, soul-searching takes time, and the current situation demands an immediate emergency solution to eradicate the rising crime in Arab society.
By what authority would the civil guard operate? What tools would it have to act effectively? Would the participants carry weapons (hot or cold)? By virtue of what? Does Arab society need more weapons in its midst? Wouldn’t the proposal turn those joining the guard into part of the circle of violence, even if the goal is otherwise? Won't the establishment of the guard turn those who join it into potential victims of the rising violence in Arab society? Is there no fear of a horrific scenario whereby criminal organizations take over the civil guard and operate under its cover, just as they do today with various security enterprises?
This matter cannot be resolved by Arab society itself, and certainly not through a civil guard. This is a state matter that deserves the immediate and effective attention of the law enforcement agencies.
