Every now and then, senior officials in the political system and “experts” claim that “Israel can defend itself using its own forces.” This statement is typically made when differences of opinion arise between Israel and the United States.
It’s important to remember that without the continuous supply of ammunition and weapons, as well as the political support we receive from the US administration, we would not be able to manage the multi-arena campaign that we are conducting. Additionally, we must acknowledge the support provided by the United States, our regional partners, and those partners from outside the region in preventing the recent Iranian attack. Of course, we should not underestimate our own contribution in foiling the attack.
It’s worth telling the truth, that given the near and far multi-arena threats and the political challenges we face, Israel needs—not to mention relies on—military and political assistance, primarily from the United States and other allies. Therefore, we must take a close look at this reality and avoid the illusion that we can defend ourselves completely on our own. In this respect, our situation is no different than many other countries.
