Dr. Yacov Bengo is a senior researcher at the INSS. He is an Israeli Major General (Ret.) who served in his last role as the Head of Planning Directorate of the IDF (J8). His military career spans over thirty-four years of service, primarily in the Armored Corps and in the General Staff. MG Bengo is an expert in force buildup and in the utility of force from the tactical level to the strategic level of the General Staff.
His practical knowledge has transformed into scholarly expertise, leading to the writing of several articles and two seminal books in which he sought to redefine military theory. The first book presented the evolving complexity of warfare, introducing the 'Operational Focus Approach.' This model seeks to enhance communication between statesmen and military leaders when employing military force. The second book, "Cracking the Code: War Hidden Methodology" aims to extract a general theory of war through a historical examination of theorists and central theories, thereby elucidating the methodology behind the theory as well as theoretical biases. Bengo is married and a father of two children.
