On September 3, 2019, the Lipkin-Shahak research program at INSS, National Security and Democracy in an Era of Post-Truth and Fake News, held a symposium on the subject of deepfake. The symposium was held in collaboration with Startup Nation Central, and focused on the effects of deepfake on national security and democracy. The following questions were examined: What is deepfake and what are its effects? Is this a new threat, or rather an updated variation of old problems? How does deepfake influence democracy, and how has it become a national security issue? And in light of these questions – why are there so far almost no startups and technologies that deal with this phenomenon?
